Pour commencer Women in the Arts Week, l’association Les Amis du National Museum of Women in the Arts, est fière de s’associer avec The American Library in Paris pour une présentation spéciale sur les Artistes femmes afro-américaines. La présentation sera en anglais.
A travers une sélection d’œuvres modernes et contemporaines – beaucoup se trouvant dans la collection du National Museum of Women in the Arts à Washington – Kathryn Wat va explorer les principes qui façonnent l’art récent par des femmes d’ascendance africaine. Sonya Clark, Ellen Gallagher, Loïs Mailou Jones, Faith Ringgold, Amy Sherald, Mickalene Thomas, et Kara Walker déconstruisent les idées reçues sur l’identité noire. Wat montrera comment ces artistes transfigurent l’art africain traditionnel, l’art historique européen, et la culture populaire.
Kathryn Wat est conservateur en chef au National Museum of Women in the Arts. Elle supervise la programmation des expositions de la collection de 4500 œuvres du musée, représentant l’art de la Renaissance jusqu’à nos jours. Elle a notamment été chargée de l’exposition Eye Wonder : Photography from the Bank of America Collection (2011) et de l’exposition R(ad)ical Love : Sister Mary Corita (2012). Elle prépare pour juin 2014 l’exposition Total Art : Contemporary Video, qui mettra en vedette des installations vidéo par des artistes venues des cinq continents. Wat est aussi conservateur et directeur du New York Avenue Sculpture Project, un programme d’art public créé en partenariat avec le gouvernement de Washington, DC. Elle est titulaire d’une maîtrise en histoire de l’art obtenue à Case Western Reserve University et d’un doctorat de l’art américain obtenue à l’University of Delaware.
